Billions Worth of Smuggled Cellphones Seized by Customs at Karachi Airport

KARACHI, Pakistan Customs has successfully intercepted attempts to smuggle valuable goods at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi and Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, as reported by ARY News today.

At Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, vigilant Customs officers stationed at the international arrival gate were able to prevent the illegal smuggling of a substantial quantity of cell phones, valued at millions of rupees. During routine surveillance, Customs staff conducted a thorough scan of the luggage of three passengers arriving from foreign countries.

The inspection resulted in the seizure of 51 mobile phones, collectively estimated at a value of Rs 27.6 million. It was revealed that the passengers, who had arrived in Karachi via a connecting flight from Dubai, had concealed the mobile phones within their clothing inside their suitcases.

Consequently, the Customs officials took swift action, apprehending the three passengers and initiating legal proceedings against them for their failure to provide tax details to the Customs personnel.

In a parallel incident, Customs officers at the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore thwarted an attempt to smuggle expensive shawls. The Customs officials discovered 240 high-value shawls concealed within a woman's luggage during the inspection process.

The woman had arrived on a private airline flight from Dubai (PA-417) and was apprehended in the act of attempting to bring these luxurious shawls, crafted from expensive and fancy materials, into the country. Deputy Collector of Customs, Saqib Warraich, stated that the shawls recovered during the examination are valued at up to Rs 1 million. After initial questioning, the woman was eventually permitted to proceed.

These two successful interceptions at Karachi and Lahore airports underscore the unwavering commitment of Pakistan Customs to combat smuggling and illegal importation of goods, protecting the nation's financial interests and security. The Customs authorities are dedicated to upholding the law and ensuring that illicit activities are swiftly and effectively dealt with.
